NWTF Mission:

The conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of the turkey hunting tradition

Welcome to the Kentucky NWTF Website...

When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys throughout North America. Since then, the number of wild turkeys has increased to more than 7 million birds thanks to state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF, its members and partners.

The NWTF, headquartered in Edgefield, S.C., is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit conservation and education organization dedicated to conserving wild turkeys and preserving hunting traditions. Growth and progress define the NWTF as it has expanded from 1,300 members in 1973 to 545,500 today.

With that growth has come impressive strides in wildlife management as the NWTF has forged dynamic partnerships across the country. Together, the NWTF's conservation partners and grassroots members have raised and spent more than $230 million upholding hunting traditions and conserving more than 11.3 million acres of wildlife habitat.

NWTF Canada
Since 1996, NWTF Canada has been plotting the map with turkey releases, fundraising banquets and local chapters. With more than 6,000 members across Canada, the NWTF is making strides to fulfill its mission.

NWTF Mexico
The NWTF is spreading its wings beyond the border of the United States, recently adding a chapter in Mexico. The event makes Mexico the third country in which NWTF is represented through chapter involvement.

SUPREME COURT RULES AMERICANS HAVE RIGHT TO

OWN GUNS FOR SELF-DEFENSE AND HUNTING!

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court says Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling strikes down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment.  The decision goes further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791.  The amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The basic issue for the justices was whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.
